Within the framework of the programme on corporate social responsibility «Ñëàâóòè÷», Carlsberg Group implemented the project on building of treating facilities for industrial wastewater at Kyiv and Zaporizhzhya breweries.
The objective of this project is to reduce the negative impact of production processes on the environment. The amount of investments into the treatment facilities made about 100 million UAH.
The project was developed by the German companies: for Zaporizhzhya brewery — by EnviroChemie and for Kyiv brewery — by Cuss Chriwa. The first stage of treatment facilities - mechanical one - was put into operation in 2007, and in 2009 the second stage - biological — was implemented.
The capacity of the given treatment facilities makes 8,000 cubic metres of wastewater per day at Zaporizhzhya brewery and 3,000 cubic metres at "Slavutich" brewery in Kyiv. The work of the facilities is completely automated.
After two stages of treatment, waste water disintegrates into methane, carbon dioxide and water. The treatment facilities work results in generation of biogas, which contains up to 70% of methane, is collected into special sections of the reactor above the water surface, discharged through the system of pipelines and burnt in steam boilers which were upgraded for operation with biogas. The total sum of upgrading made up 8 million UAH.
Such use of biogas reduces the consumption of natural gas and, as a result, the emission of ÑÎ2 into the environment. According to the preliminary results the index of natural gas consumption by the company dropped by 12-15%.
The project implementation was another stage of "Slavutich" systematic approach to cost reduction due to the use of "green" technologies.
Yuri Bykoriz, Executive Vice-President at «Ñëàâóòè÷», Carlsberg Group: "The "Slavutich" company was the first among the Ukrainian brewers to apply this technology of wastewater treatment, which lets not only be responsible to the environment, but also reduce the consumption of natural gas in manufacturing. The factor of solicitous attitude to the nature starts playing the increasing role in the development of operational business strategy which is focused on reducing the expenses base. Therefore we will certainly maintain the implementation of "green" technologies at our breweries."
